Affordable Neutral Rugs: 10 Places to Snag Them

affordable neutral rugs

So, we had a bit of a CATastrophe last week… I’ll spare you the disgusting details, but let’s just say darling kitty had tummy trouble no amount of Resolve could solve! The ivory shag rug we’ve had nearly 15 years year wound up curbside. It has served us well. However, this space has been crying for an update. What better way to freshen things up than by adding an affordable neutral rug?

Are you rug shopping too? I’ve been spending hours and hours searching, so I thought I would share my findings. Online shopping can get a bit overwhelming. There are almost too many options! Additionally, it’s challenging to get a feel for quality, softness and color based solely on online images.

Here are the rugs making my list, plus 10 great places to score affordable neutral rugs! Click on any picture for details.

  1. Hazy Lattice Rug (West Elm)

  2. Braid Stripe Sweater Rug (West Elm)

  3. Avah Tufted Wool Rug (Wayfair)

  4. Textured Hexagon Rug (West Elm)

  5. Safavieh Natura Annedorte Wool Rug (Overstock)

  6. Whighan Hand-Woven Rug (Wayfair)

  7. Era Rug (Lulu & Georgia)

  8. Elfen Textured Wool Rug (CB2)

  9. Faye Nursery Rug (West Elm)

The space we are working with is a sitting room that doubles as a playroom (it’s also my “office”). It takes a lot of abuse, but it is also one of my favorite spaces because of the gorgeous natural light that streams in here in the afternoons. Consequently, I am not about to put a utility carpet in here. Durability is important, but also elegance.

We were looking for something to add texture and softness, breaking up our wood floors. Our home is older (built in 1912), so we keep our décor and furniture largely transitional in style (i.e. a mix of traditional and modern elements). The room already had pops of color, teal accents in the art and decorative pillows. Therefore, we had our eyes on affordable neutral rugs. We were searching for ivory and cream styles with subtle patterns/texture. They needed to provide interest, but in a subdued and contemporary way.

Can you spot the culprit hiding below? Don’t think I could duplicate this cat-ear photo if I tried, lol! Such a sneaky kitty…

Now, let’s talk about a few great places to score rugs!

Wayfair – This is typically my first stop for all things home décor simply because of the HUGE selection. If you have a specific style, shape, color, or material in mind, there’s a good chance Wayfair will have it. The majority of Wayfair rugs are machine-loomed from synthetic materials (hence the affordable price point). However, if you are looking for something high-end, Wayfair carries some of those too.

Amazon – Surprise, surprise… Just kidding! Of course this behemoth makes the list because it carries everything under the kitchen sink. It’s a great place to comparison shop and if you have Prime, the free two-day shipping is pretty handy.

West Elm – Love transitional or contemporary design? You will crush hard on the offerings from West Elm! It has beautiful, on-trend styles. Additionally, you know you are getting quality pieces at an affordable-moderate price point.

IKEA – Affordable neutral rugs and more! IKEA has a fabulous rug selection for those on a budget. You will find everything from handmade rugs to low-pile beauties (some as little as $10) at the Swedish retailer. Be aware IKEA offerings can move quickly. There’s a chance your preferred color or size won’t be available, so if you see something you like snag it immediately.

World Market – This retailer specializes in eclectic, unique pieces with a global flair. It offers a variety of pile heights, materials, and color schemes and is an especially handy place to shop for those looking for flatweave rugs, like jute.

Urban Outfitters – I used to think of Urban Outfitters more for clothing, but it is a dream-come-true for those who love bohemian décor. The flatweave rugs are typically the most affordable on the site, but you can also find some decently priced shag or tufted options.

Joss & Main – In my opinion, this website is easier to search than Wayfair (although it is under the same parent company). You can expect beautiful offerings and the ability to narrow down your search by material, color, size, price, customer rating, room, recommend use, etc.

Lulu and Georgia – This company stole my heart in seconds! Its rugs are beyond gorgeous and precisely what lovers of transitional design are craving. It’s a bit spendy, when compared to some of the other websites for affordable neutral rugs on this list, but the pieces are quality. These are heirlooms you will hang onto for years to come.

All Modern – Similar in price point to Wayfair and Joss & Main, All Modern is a great option for those who love clean lines and minimalist design. Looking for something punchy and modern? You can find bold piece too!

CB2 – Similar to All Modern, CB2 (related to Crate and Barrel) is another contemporary option for rug seekers. Its pieces are sleek, simple and streamlined. There is so much to love!
